Sokou

Born in 1997 in Sichuan, China.

From an early age, I was fascinated by Japanese tokusatsu culture, drawn to its gigantic characters and eccentric designs. As a child, I would come home from school, watch Ultraman on TV, and enthusiastically draw on sheets of paper.

With a dream of becoming an illustrator, I moved to Japan in 2022.
At Kyoto University of the Arts, I studied under Keiji Ito and explored the uniquely Japanese illustration style known as Heta-uma. I was strongly inspired by its playful spirit and intentionally awkward expressions, which deeply influenced both my research and creative practice.

While in graduate school, my work was selected for both the 19th and 20th Tokyo Illustrators Society (TIS) Competitions.

I mainly work digitally, while also experimenting with Posca drawings and collage-based expressions. I enjoy creating illustrations that depict strange and humorous worlds where quirkiness and discomfort coexist.

I hope to build a career as an illustrator in Japan and work across a variety of media, including books, magazines, advertising, and more.
