Zanshin
2025
Zanshin (残心) is a Japanese term used in martial arts. It combines the ideas of “remaining” and “mind” or “awareness,” and refers to a state in which mental focus and awareness continue even after a technique or action has been completed. Zanshin does not mean merely maintaining a physical posture after movement. Rather, it describes a mental state characterized by: ・the absence of carelessness or complacency, ・the ability to respond immediately to the next situation, and ・sustained awareness of one’s opponent and surroundings. I t represents a balance between calmness and alert tension, and is regarded as an essential element of traditional Japanese martial arts.
