SOMAMICHI at NOTO

2024

I created an illustration for Somaiki, an auberge in Noto, and designed it for a magazine ad and a flyer. I received a message from Akito Akagi, the owner and a Wajima lacquerware painter, asking me to do a design for him. I was delighted, but at the same time, I was under a lot of pressure to take on this responsibility. I visited Akito Akagi's workshop for the first time last July, and unexpectedly encountered "Soma", an auberge that matches my taste in food without a gap of 0.1mm, and the beauty of the working style of the chef, Mr. Yutaka Kitazaki, and everyone else. https:// www.daihatsu.co.jp/lyu... /book/no07/madowoakete07/ However, after January 1 of this year, I only found myself helpless. After that, I followed Mr. Akagi's efforts to "keep the Wajima lacquerware light burning" on SNS, and was thinking about how I could exert my strength when the time came, when I was asked to take on this major role. As a former editor, Mr. Akagi's order to "express the soma with a picture of the lighthouse" along with the necessary text was a perfect idea for something like this. After sorting out what we needed to convey visually, we decided that the word "Soma-michi" should play the leading role, and the margins as a place where people are allowed to stay were important. (I found myself feeling quite breathless when I looked into various magazine advertisements.) I imagine that "lighthouse" was inspired by the picture book "Todai" that I delivered to Mr. Akagi, and I was grateful for the idea, but I chose to describe it in a modest way. No, no, no, in Noto, "Somadai" and Mr. Akagi himself are the "lighthouse". In September, "Soma-ki" will reopen "temporarily" in a new store, but it must be a lot of hard work in Noto, where we cannot talk about recovery yet. However, it will be a tough task, The meaning of the word "sommelier" is a mountain path used by people who worked in the mountains, such as matagi and yamako (mountain goats). We believe that the store, which is run like a road that has been trodden by people over the years, will serve as a lighthouse for the people of Noto. If no customers show up, it's my fault," I told myself. I told myself, "If no customers show up, it's my fault," and finished up.
