Noh_HAGOROMO

2024

A4 flyer for information on Noh performances. The program is “Hagoromo,” which is considered a major story. Set in Mihonomatsubara in Suruga Province, it is a story that transcends human knowledge, performed between heaven and the sea. The costumes and gestures of the Noh play are a beautiful deformation of the human being as it is, so I felt I had no choice but to paint this one head-on. I designed this piece by selecting from among several pictures I had painted at once with watercolors on Japanese paper, using my left hand. The text can say a lot by writing some of it by hand, so I worked backwards from there and cut down on the words and laid out the text vertically, with a “cursive” style in mind, and with a shaky layout. The performance was a big hit, thank goodness!
