With the new freelance law coming into effect in 2024, freelancers who are eligible for workers' compensation insurance will be covered for a wider range of jobs than ever before. For the past several years, I have been invited to participate in the “Advisory Board on Freelance Work and Contracts” organized by RENGO (Japanese Trade Union Confederation), and have made a number of proposals on issues facing freelance workers. As a result of these efforts, a workers' accident compensation insurance plan was developed that freelance illustrators can also join. I received an offer to produce illustrations that would keep pace with such social movements, and I drew people working as freelance illustrators. What is very difficult nowadays in this kind of work is the expression of gender. I have always avoided drawing gender with exaggerated physical characteristics, so I thought of the many people I have met in the real world and proceeded to characterize them. The client expressed a desire to avoid portraying women in skirts, but I said, sorry, isn't there a job where you are chosen because you can wear skirts with ease? We also left some of the skirts depicting them in skirts.
