NOTO_Early Spring Journey

2024

Kazue Morisaki's travel essay "Noto Early Spring Journey," published in 1983, has been combined with her 1984 book "Across the Tsugaru Strait" to be published in paperback. I drew the cover illustration. This is meant as a cheer for Noto, which is in the process of recovery and reconstruction after the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024, and I felt honored and inspired to be nominated for such a project. In a meeting with the editor and designer Keiko Ogawa, I shared my memories of my trips to Noto and worked to find a clue that connects 1983 with the present. My first visit to Noto was just recently, in July 2023, when I visited Akagi Akito, a Wajima lacquer artist. The "truly rich human activities" that I encountered and felt at that time have been put in a precarious state by the Noto Peninsula earthquake. After that, I visited Noto in early spring in March, autumn in October, and winter in December, and from among the scenery of Noto I roughly drew some scenes that I saw between the lines of Morisaki's words, and in one go I painted the rainy Noto Bay scenery seen from the port of Nanao City in March. If someone asked me, "What was the medium used for this painting?" I would like to answer, "The love for the people I met in Noto." Noto will continue to be my heart.
