I illustrated Yoshitaka Nanki's novel “Five Fights, Four Losses, One Minute, Six Goals,” which will appear in the February 2025 issue of Novel Subaru, following my previous work, “Fantasista no Bearer,” which appeared in the October 2023 issue of Subaru. Both “Five Fights” and “Fantasista” depict the world of women's soccer, and the depiction of soccer play is extremely skillful. The characters are comically and vividly drawn, and the interplay of tenderness, sadness, and hope is wonderful. In the previous issue, the yuri relationship between high school girls was portrayed with elegance and freshness, and in this issue, the female office worker in a minefield fashion, who plays a minor role, is portrayed with love as a comical yet flexible person. The main character has given up playing soccer after being defeated by a strong rival, but he is still in a flustered state of “not fully defeated. But he is still in a state of “not fully defeated.” From there, he checks his footing and turns it into a challenge, which makes me think, “I want to draw! I want to draw it. Then, what about that figure? In the novel, it is written that his style of play is similar to that of Gentile, the Italian defender who was constantly marked by Maradona, but Gentile is a tall man with a mustache. I myself am reminded of Hikaru Kitagawa, a defender of Nadeshiko Japan. She is a super player who plays overseas, but as a native of Ishikawa Prefecture, I thought I should pay tribute to her for her heartwarming response to the Noto Peninsula earthquake. I found out that Yoshitaka Nanki is very skillful in his portrayal of women, and I found out that his work “Moon and Monster” won a prize in the “Yuri Literary Novel Contest” under the name “Soviet Yuri” (Soviet Lily). I found out that he was a very popular author in the area. I see! He was born in 1991 and pronounced “Namboku” as “Nanki. Interesting. The unusually detailed trimming of the image should have worked well. Last but not least, it was fun to draw a girl in mine fashion.
