BOKUTO Welcome Flag

2024

This "Welcome Flag" was designed in front of the main gate of the Tokyo Metropolitan Sumida Special Needs School, and was created from works that were born from repeated art sessions with all 350 students. Children who need support in their studies, from first grade elementary school to third grade high school, painted to the best of their ability on two 7-meter pieces of paper. In addition, there was an art session in the form of a correspondence of pictures with children who could not come to school due to illness or other reasons and were learning at home or in the hospital. Combining all of these materials, three 25-meter banners were created, and they were completed as something that would sparkle and tell the people of the town, "Beautiful people are studying here!" What I did was not to teach drawing, but to communicate. In any case, I made eye contact with each student and returned the most beautiful moment of each student's expression in words. The same goes for the teachers who assist and instruct the children. This is the very essence of my illustrations, and it has become a project that shines a light on the potential of children who are described as "physically disabled." Everyone please go and see it.
