LOVE MAEBASHI

2025

I was responsible for the Maebashi City edition of "Gunma Ai," a 15-column city promotional spread published in Gunma's local newspaper, the Jomo Shimbun, handling everything from interviews to editing, illustrations, and design. I teamed up with a strong city hall staff member and interviewed eight groups of residents who were pre-suggested as interview subjects. By editing without anticipating the answers, I was able to naturally articulate the appeal of Maebashi. To convey a significant amount of information in a limited space, I thought it would be best to create a spread that leaves room for more information, and I conveyed much of what I wanted to convey through simple portraits of the people I interviewed. As a result, I believe readers were able to sense Maebashi's charm, its "open, gentle space," the moment they opened the newspaper, more than I could have done with words. This kind of highly physical communication is truly unique to print media. I'm grateful to the people of Maebashi City, who trusted me more than I do as an illustrator. I'd love for other municipalities to join me in articulating and visualizing their local attractions from scratch!
